Our History
The Madison Retriever Club was organized in the early 1950s. The club was originally located in the Westport area north of Madison. In 1964-65 the club moved to its present location with the purchase of 22 acres of land on the shores of
Hook Lake
. Members tore down fences, moved boulders, cut down brush and helped build a road into the new property. In subsequent years several digging projects took place to develop a very fine water training facility.
The clubhouse, a former Truax Air Force medical building, was moved from the Westport location to its present site soon after the land was cleared. Several remodeling projects have transformed the building (nearly torn down in 1990) into a useful facility. In 1999, the old bird pen was demolished and members built a new one.
The club purchased an additional 45 acres of land near
Stoughton
, Wisconsin in the 1980's. Since purchasing this land, more than $50,000 has been spent on water improvements, fencing and a shelter, making this parcel a premier training area. Future improvements to the water site and road are in progress.
In 2000, the club purchased its third property, affectionately referred to as the
Gallagher
property. The first priority was to put in the half-mile drive way and parking area. In the fall of 2003, we added three ponds and completed a road around the entire perimeter of the property. Future plans include reshaping the ponds, adding more mounds to run from, and planting bushes for additional cover.
